Devin McDaniel - Web Developer / Musician

Hi there! I’m Devin McDaniel, a former cruise ship musician from the USA, now turned web developer based in England, United Kingdom. When I’m not building and studying, I enjoy spending time with my wife and 1-year-old son, cooking, and playing the saxophone. My journey into web development was inspired by my love for music and technology, and I’m excited to share my story with you.

Skills and Expertise

As a new developer, I have specialised in full-stack development with a focus on front-end technologies. I particularly enjoy working with React and NextJS, and most recently, Astro. On the backend, I have experience with Node.js and Express, and I’m always eager to expand my knowledge and explore new technologies. As a musician of over 20 years, I bring a unique perspective to web development, combining my passion for creativity and innovation with a strong foundation in technical skills.

World Traveler

After graduating from the University of North Texas in 2012 (M.M. in Jazz Studies), I embarked on a journey as a professional musician, performing on cruise ships around the world. This experience allowed me to explore new cultures, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and develop a deep appreciation for the power of music to connect people across borders. Every contract brought new, exciting challenges and experiences, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have seen the world through the lens of music. I met my wife while working on a ship, and we now live in England with our son.

Transition to Web Development

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the cruise industry came to a halt, and I found myself at a crossroads. Initially, I was uncertain about my future and how to transition to a new career while unable to leave home. I utilised my expertise in music, passion for technology, and creative skills to explore electronic music production. While I found it interesting and enjoyable, I was drawn to the world of web development. I was inspired by the creativity and innovation in the tech industry and decided to pursue a career in web development. I started with freeCodeCamp and eventually became a member of ZeroToMastery Academy, furthering my journey to become a full-stack developer.

I am currently employed by The Rolo Group as Systems Developer.

I am passionate about continuous learning and personal growth. I continually seek new opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills, whether through online courses, workshops, or collaborative projects. I believe that the key to success in any field is a commitment to lifelong learning and a willingness to adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
